From 1 April, your permanent account number (PAN card) may become useless, if you have not linked it to your Aadhaar card. The time limit for providing PAN link with Aadhaar has been extended many times by the Central Government. Now you can get this linking done by 31 March 2021. The Center had earlier extended the last date for Aadhaar-PAN linking on 30 June 2020 to 31 March 2021. Due to the lockdown implemented due to the Covid 19 pandemic last year, the government extended the deadline for income tax returns as well as the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking to 30 June 2020 instead of 31 March 2020, which the government increased once more.
- Penalty of 10 thousand!
Under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, if a PAN card is not linked with Aadhaar within the stipulated time frame, then a penalty of Rs 10000 may have to be paid. With this your PAN card will also become inactive. From the Income Tax Department, it will be understood that your PAN is not in accordance with the prescribed rules.
- Will not be able to do this work!
It is important to know that PAN card is compulsory for opening an account with a bank, buying mutual funds or shares, even for cash transactions of more than 50 thousand rupees. This means that if you have not linked the PAN card with Aadhaar, then your PAN will become inactive and you will not be able to do this work.
If you have not yet linked your PAN to Aadhaar, you can complete this process through SMS, online or offline. It should be noted that there should be no difference in demographic details like name, gender and date of birth in both documents for linking of PAN and Aadhaar. If this is the case then the linking can be canceled.
Process to link PAN to Aadhaar-

Click on ‘Link Aadhar’ in the Quick Links section on the left.
Now the page will open, fill in PAN, Aadhaar number and your name on Aadhaar.
If only the year of birth is mentioned in your Aadhaar, then you have to tick this option – ‘I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card’.
After this enter the captcha code and click on the link base.
After this, a confirmation page will open, in which the PAN will show that the Aadhaar has been successfully linked.
PAN and Aadhaar can also be linked by going to the service center of PAN service provider, NSDL or UTIITSL. For this, the form ‘Annexure-I’ will have to be filled and a copy of some supporting documents such as PAN card and Aadhaar card will have to be taken together. This process is not free. You will have to pay a fixed fee. This fee will depend on whether PAN or Aadhaar details have been improved at the time of linking.
