Amarjit Singh Sidhu, brother of a cabinet minister and local MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, was elected mayor of the Mohali Municipal Corporation after the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected councilors at MC Bhawan in Mohali on Monday.

Amrik Singh Somal and Kuljit Singh Bedi were elected Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively.
Meanwhile, expressing their resentment, Congress councilor and former senior deputy mayor Rishav Jain and wife Rajrani Jain (also councilor) and councilors of Azad Group of former mayor Kulwant Singh boycotted the ceremony after taking the oath.

During the voting on February 14, Paramjit Singh Kahlon had filed a case against Amarjit Singh Sidhu for “rigging the polls” in Ward 10 during the MC election. The court had ordered re-polling in Ward 10 on February 17 and the results of all 50 wards were announced on February 18.

Twenty-five seats were booked for women and the Congress candidates won on 37 seats. None of the candidates of the Shiromani Akali Dal and the BJP won the election while 13 candidates of Azad Group had won. Councillors of Azad group would be main party sitting in opposition in the 50-member House.
