Professor Arvind, eminent physicist and Dean of Research and Development, Indian Institute of Science and Research, Mohali, has today been appointed Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, Patiala for a term of three years.
The post of Vice Chancellor had been vacant for the past six months after resign of DrB S Ghumman . Meanwhile, the state government had appointed senior officer RavneetKaur as acting vice chancellor.
Professor Arvind is a renowned theoretical quantum physicist who has a keen interest in developing methods of scientific education, scientific communication and science education in the Punjabi language. He did his MSc in Physics from IIT, Kanpur and his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the Department of Theoretical Studies and Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1997. He later served as a faculty member in the Department of Physics, Guru Nanak Dev University.
From 2002 to 2004, he served as a special faculty member in the Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA. He joined the Department of Physics at IIT, Madras in 2005.
In August 2007, he moved to IISER, Mohali where he played a leading role in the establishment of the institute and served among the founding faculty members. He has published 70 works in international journals and under his tutelage, 7 students have completed Ph.D. and 40 have completed their M.Sc. theses.
According to a spokesperson of the Chief Minister’s Office, 64 applications were received for the post by UGC.As per the guidelines, 10 names were found invalid and 14 names were shortlisted. A four member committee headed by Chief Secretary Vinnie Mahajan interviewed the shortlisted candidates and a panel of three names was sent by the Chief Minister for selection. The Chief Minister also called on the Governor of Punjab, who is also the Chancellor of the University to reccommend Prof. Arvind’s appointment. PTI
