Corona is wreaking havoc in the electoral state of Bengal. According to media reports, every second person undergoing the RT-PCR test in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, is getting corona positive. Whereas, speaking of the state, one out of every 4 people who give samples is getting infected during the investigation.
The positivity rate in Kolkata and its environment has reached 45 to 55%, according to media reports quoting a doctor from a large lab conducting RT-PCR tests in West Bengal. While in other parts of the state it is close to 24%.
During the examination of 25,766 samples in the state on April 1, only 1274 samples were found positive then the positivity rate was 4.9%. On Saturday, 55,060 samples were tested and found 14,281 positive, an infection rate of 25.9%. Simply put, at the beginning of April, only one person out of 20 who arrived for the test was getting positive. That is, then the positivity rate in the state was close to 5%. In this way, the rate of infection has increased 5 times in less than a month.
The report also quoted doctors as saying that the actual number of corona infections could be much higher. Many patients are asymptomatic or have fewer symptoms. These people are not reaching for the corona test. Doctors say that testing is not getting enough in the state, while testing is considered to be the most effective way to prevent corona.
Doctors say that new mutants of the virus are spreading rapidly and that is why more people are getting infected in less time. In most cases, the whole family is getting infected. Here, only those people who are showing symptoms of corona are reaching for the test. This is also responsible for the rapid spread of the infection.
Alok Roy, chairman of Medica Group and a nuclear cardiologist, was quoted as saying that the positivity rate in the testing lab has suddenly increased by 50%. In such cases, the pressure of sample testing is high. But it’s good that people are investigating. How fast we are able to detect the virus has an effect on the treatment of the patient.
Kolkata-based NICED has said that the positive rate in its lab is 55%. Here, in all the major labs of the city, it has been observed that the positive samples have increased by 20% in the second week after Durga Puja as compared to the first week of April.
According to health department sources, positive cases are more in North and South 24 Parganas and Howrah. Howrah is most affected. Apart from this, the level of infection has also increased rapidly in Burdwan, Malda, and Murshidabad. The rate of corona infection may be higher in different districts of the state. But it is important to increase testing to understand this.
